Assured Lifecycle Support (ALS)
Protect Your Program from Obsolescence
Defence and mission-critical programs can span decades. During that time, component manufacturers discontinue parts, suppliers change specifications, operating systems reach end-of-life, and boards drift from their original configuration. Astute Systems' Assured Lifecycle Support programme guarantees your hardware and software remain identical—build after build, year after year—for the entire life of your program.
Inspired by industry best practices from companies like Curtiss-Wright (Total LifeCycle Management™) and Abaco Systems (Product Lifecycle Management), our service provides the assurance and visibility that prime contractors and programme offices demand.
How It Works
1. Configuration Baseline Capture
We document the complete manufacturing data package for your product configuration:
- Full Bill of Materials (BOM) — every component, revision, and approved alternate
- Firmware & Software Versions — BSP, drivers, BIOS/UEFI, and diagnostic firmware locked to specific revisions
- Build State Documentation — address mapping, I/O configurations, jumper settings, and test parameters
- Approved Vendor List (AVL) — qualified component sources and acceptable substitutes
2. BSP Freeze (Board Support Package)
Hardware is only half the picture. Our BSP Freeze locks down the complete software environment that runs on your board:
| Element | What's Frozen |
|---|---|
| Operating System | Specific kernel version, patch level, and security updates validated for your configuration |
| Drivers | Exact driver versions for all peripherals—GPU, network, serial, CAN, MIL-STD-1553 |
| BIOS/UEFI Firmware | Boot firmware revision locked; no silent updates |
| Board Support Libraries | Hardware abstraction layer, DMA engines, interrupt controllers |
| Middleware & Runtime | GStreamer, DDS, video codec versions matched to your application |
| Build Toolchain | Compiler version, flags, and build environment archived for reproducibility |
| Security Patches | Curated security updates backported to your frozen BSP—validated before release |
Why BSP Freeze matters:
- A kernel update can break real-time performance or peripheral compatibility
- Driver version mismatches cause intermittent failures that are near-impossible to diagnose in the field
- Software drift between production batches creates fleet fragmentation and supportability nightmares
- Regulatory re-qualification may be triggered by any uncontrolled software change
Your frozen BSP is maintained in a version-controlled repository with full build reproducibility. If a critical security vulnerability requires patching, we validate the fix against your exact hardware configuration before release, with full regression test evidence.
3. Custom Part Number Assignment
Once frozen, your configuration receives a dedicated Astute Systems part number:
| Element | Example |
|---|---|
| Base Product | BUSHNET-111001 |
| Customer Code | -DSTL |
| Freeze Revision | -F01 |
| Combined | BUSHNET-1111001-DSTL-F01 |
This part number guarantees that every unit ordered against it is manufactured to the exact same specification—no silent substitutions, no undocumented changes.
4. Managed Obsolescence
Obsolescence is inevitable—but it doesn't have to be a crisis. Our Managed Obsolescence process continuously monitors your frozen BOM and provides structured, predictable responses when components reach end-of-life.
Proactive Monitoring:
- Continuous surveillance of manufacturer Product Change Notices (PCNs) and Product Discontinuation Notices (PDNs)
- Subscription to GIDEP (Government-Industry Data Exchange Program) alerts
- Distributor allocation and lead-time trend analysis
- Cross-referencing against AMSREF, IHS, and SiliconExpert obsolescence databases
Obsolescence Response Framework:
| Phase | Action | Timeline |
|---|---|---|
| Early Warning | Component flagged as at-risk (manufacturer signals reduced investment or approaching EOL) | 18–36 months before EOL |
| Assessment | Impact analysis on your configuration; alternate sourcing evaluated | Within 30 days of notification |
| Mitigation Planning | Formal options presented: approved alternate, last time buy, or design change | Within 60 days |
| Execution | Chosen mitigation implemented with full change control and traceability | Per agreed schedule |
| Verification | Requalification testing (if required) and updated documentation | Before next production run |
Why managed obsolescence is critical:
- The average electronic component lifecycle is now 3–5 years, yet defence programmes last 20–40 years
- A single obsolete FPGA, memory device, or connector can halt an entire production line
- Reactive responses cost 10–50× more than proactive management
- Without formal processes, obsolescence risks are invisible until they become programme-stopping emergencies
5. Last Time Buy & Component Storage
When a component reaches end-of-life, the most cost-effective mitigation is often a **Last Time Buy (LTB)**—purchasing sufficient stock to cover the remaining programme lifetime. Astute Systems manages the entire process:
Last Time Buy Management:
- Demand Forecasting — calculate required quantities based on your production schedule, spares requirement, and attrition rates
- Procurement Execution — place and manage orders with authorised distributors before allocation windows close
- Incoming Inspection — all LTB stock subjected to full incoming quality inspection and counterfeit screening
- Lot Traceability — every component tracked by date code, lot number, and source
Environmentally Controlled Storage:
LTB components are stored in our purpose-built, environmentally controlled facility:
| Parameter | Specification |
|---|---|
| Temperature | 15–25°C (maintained within ±2°C) |
| Humidity | 40–60% RH (moisture-sensitive devices stored in MBB with desiccant) |
| ESD Protection | Full EPA (ESD Protected Area) compliance to IEC 61340-5-1 |
| Shelf Life Monitoring | Automated alerts for solder paste shelf life, MSL bake-out schedules, and electrolytic capacitor reforming |
| Security | Access-controlled, alarmed, CCTV monitored |
| Insurance | Full replacement value coverage |
Storage Lifecycle Services:
- Periodic Health Checks — stored components inspected on schedule to verify condition and solderability
- MSL Reset — moisture-sensitive devices baked and resealed per IPC/JEDEC J-STD-033 before dispatch
- Sample Testing — destructive/non-destructive testing on storage samples at defined intervals to confirm viability
- Inventory Reporting — real-time visibility of remaining stock levels against your programme forecast
- Disposal Management — controlled disposal of expired or surplus stock with full audit trail
Components stored correctly can remain viable for 10–20+ years. Without proper environmental control, solder joint reliability, package integrity, and electrical parameters degrade—turning your investment into scrap.
6. Change Control
Two levels of change management are available:
| Level | Description | Included In |
|---|---|---|
| Change Notification | You are informed of any proposed changes to your frozen baseline before implementation | Standard |
| Change Approval | No changes are made without your written approval—you control the configuration baseline | Premium |
Any change—whether driven by component obsolescence, supplier discontinuation, or process improvement—goes through formal Engineering Change Notice (ECN) procedures with full traceability.
Annual Health Check Report
Every frozen configuration includes an Annual Health Check Report delivered to your programme team. This proactive obsolescence monitoring ensures you are never caught off guard.
| Section | Detail |

Why This Matters
The Cost of Unmanaged Obsolescence
Without proactive lifecycle management:
- Unplanned redesigns can cost 10–50× the original component cost
- Qualification delays of 6–18 months when forced substitutions require revalidation
- Fleet inconsistency when different production batches use different components or software, creating supportability nightmares
- Software drift silently degrades performance or breaks functionality when BSP versions diverge across the fleet
- Programme risk when a single component EOL or kernel deprecation threatens an entire platform delivery
Our Commitment
- Configuration Identity — later purchases are identical to the original (hardware and software), guaranteed
- BSP Continuity — your software environment is maintained, patched, and reproducible for the life of the programme
- Knowledge Preservation — we maintain staff expertise, test equipment, and diagnostic capability for every frozen configuration indefinitely
- Proactive Notification — minimum 12 months advance warning of any identified obsolescence risk
- Contractual Flow-Down Compliance — our processes satisfy MoD and prime contractor lifecycle management requirements (DEF STAN 00-600, IEC 62402)
Industry Standards Alignment
| Standard | Relevance |
|---|---|
| DEF STAN 00-600 | UK MoD Obsolescence Management standard |
| IEC 62402 | International standard for obsolescence management |
